I started reading to my son in infancy, and he was reading for himself by the time he was 4, so that early start works! Some of his favorites - and therefore mine - were:
Make Way For Ducklings - Robert McCloskey
Where the Wild Things Are - Maurice Sendak
One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish - Dr. Seuss
Marvin K. Mooney, Will You Please Go Now! - Dr. Seuss
Green Eggs and Ham - Dr. Seuss
(OK, I'd better stop listing these - just to sum up, Dr. Seuss was very well-liked at our house)
Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel - Virginia Lee Burton
The Little Engine That Could - Watty Piper
And the good part is that this almost-college-grad still reads for fun, although his tastes have changed in the last 20 years :-).
Fantastic list!

Not a mom yet, but here in Asia parents tend to use simplified local folkslore to read to their children.
